Wrapping Up the Season on the Farm and Preparing for the Next

As the growing season winds down, we’re hard at work here at Bloomin Station, shifting gears to prepare for the winter months and, soon enough, the new planting season in the greenhouse. This time of year is always a mixture of reflection, gratitude, and preparation.

First on the list is clearing out the fields. We turn over the soil, breaking down the remnants of this year’s crop to prepare the ground for next season. This process gives nutrients back to the soil, creating a healthy foundation for next year’s plants. As part of the cleanup, we also pull out all the sprinkler pipes. These essential pieces are carefully stored away to ensure they’re ready for next year’s use, preserving their lifespan and helping us avoid unnecessary replacements.

With the fields and equipment wrapped up, we move on to projects that keep getting sidelined during the busy season. We tackle essential repairs and upgrades, from mending greenhouse frames to checking our irrigation systems. By getting these projects done now, we can focus more fully on planting and nurturing in the spring without worrying about maintenance delays.

Soon, the greenhouse will start coming to life again as we begin planting the first seeds for the 2025 season. Winter might be a quieter time, but for us, it’s filled with the anticipation of new growth. Each task we complete now gets us one step closer to that rewarding first bloom of spring.
